There are a number of organisations that help backpackers, usually but not always from overseas, to find free board and keep in exchange for work on organic properties. Note that you will be doing much more work than the value of your accommodation and the idea is that you are learning a craft at the same time. If you are not fit and not keen on organic farming, this is not for you. We include it here because it will suit a small handful of people.
Willing Workers on Organic Farms or WWOOfers
WWOOFing gives you the opportunity to work on Australian Organic Farms, exchanging 4 – 6 hours work per day for your meals and accommodation, usually in the family home. You can read all about them here. http://www.wwoof.com.au/
Help Exchange (HelpX)
HelpX is similar but offers a much broader range of options. It is an online listing of host organic farms, non-organic farms, farmstays, homestays, ranches, lodges, B&Bs, backpackers hostels and even sailing boats who invite volunteer helpers to stay with them short-term in exchange for food and accommodation. You can read all about them here. https://www.helpx.net/
Have you experienced volunteering?
If you have had experiences with Wwoofers or HelpX, we would love to hear about them, and any tips and tricks you think others need to know. Please fill out the Have your say field at the bottom of the page, and let us know what we have missed. This website is in its early days and we rely on those in the know to make it the best it can be.
