Living on the road

This section covers anything on wheels that can be driven from one place to another. This is an option that is fraught with danger, particularly for women, but it can also be a very good way of making the most of what would otherwise be a bad situation.

If you are going to do this you must do your research and find the safe ways of doing it.

Living in a van

As a woman, it is much better to travel with a co-driver or with a group of other women doing the same thing. If you have a van or a vehicle you can sleep in, consider joining Rolling Solo.

They have a section on hints and tips that is open to non members . Go to their blog at:

The have some very helpful articles such as this one:

Free parking areas for travellers

If you are living on the road it is important to be able to park overnight somewhere safe and somewhere that has cooking facilities and toilets. There are many guidebooks for campers on-line that include guides for paid sites and guides for free sites.

Living in a car

Living in a car is never a safe option. As a woman, where are you going to hide?  One lady I know, who lives in her car, often parks overnight in cemeteries because no-one goes there at night. What other tips do women who have done this have? How do you find safe parking spots? Please let us know using the comments field below.

How you can help us and other readers

None of our authors has lived in a car or on the road, so we are not the experts on how to do this. Some of you are. Please tell us your experiences and your tips and tricks in the Reply field at the bottom of the page, and let us know what we have missed. This website is in its early days and we rely on those in the know to make it the best it can be.
